Congresswoman Brownley Introduces Katie Meyer’s Law 9/23/2025
Nearly one year to the day that Governor Newsom signed Katie Meyer’s Law in California, Congresswoman Julia Brownley (D-CA) has introduced federal legislation that would “ensure students at higher education institutions have the right to select an independent adviser to help them navigate disciplinary proceedings and create new reporting requirements for campus suicide incidents. The bill was inspired by the life of Katie Meyer, whose tragic passing underscored the urgent need for greater protections and support for students.”

California AB 1575 (Irwin) | Katie Meyer’s Law
California AB 1575 will provide students with an important option to select an outside adviser to participate alongside the student during administration-initiated disciplinary actions when there is an alleged violation of the student code of conduct. It will also require public universities and community colleges to provide selected advisers training on the institution’s adjudication procedures.
